Overview

SDG&E is a regulated public utility that provides energy service to 3.4 million consumers through 1.4 million electric meters and more than 855,000 natural gas meters in San Diego and southern Orange counties. The utility’s area spans 4,100 square miles. The Rule 45 and Multi-Family project aims to upgrade the SDG&E system to accommodate new EV charger stations. This includes extending the distribution feeder wire, installing transformers and necessary equipment to protect the system, and running secondary and services to the charger. The Rule 45 EV Charging Station Infrastructure Program works with EV service providers to install new EV charging stations throughout San Diego County and parts of Orange County.

Cordoba’s Role

SDG&E has contracted Cordoba on their Rule 45 EV programs to perform new business support that includes project management and planning services. This comprehensive scope includes overseeing projects within the multi-family housing sector, including high and midrise apartment complexes and tract homes. Cordoba manages each project from kick-off to closing and handles all scopes of the EV work directly with SDG&E’s customers.

Cordoba planners play a crucial role in the success of the program by reviewing EV service providers’ (EVSP) documents to ensure accuracy of site location and electrical plans. Utilizing tools like GIS, planners assess available electrical distribution sources and conduct site visits to document existing field conditions, verify SDG&E structures, determine new equipment locations, and strategize optimal service routing. They also liaise with EVSPs to address site-specific challenges, prepare feasibility studies outlining the best delivery methods for electrical distribution to the EV site, and initiate essential load studies, fusing reports, and distribution planning worksheets as needed. Additionally, they are responsible for preparing and delivering service orders tailored to the installation of Rule 45 EV charging sites.
