Oakland Unified School District’s Fremont High School Transformation Project: The Fremont High School Transformation Project, for which Cordoba Corporation provided construction management services, was recently recognized with a “Best Projects: Award of Merit – K-12 Education” by Engineering News-Record. Completed on time and on budget, the project is also notable for meeting goals for small business participation and apprentice involvement. In addition, the project is an example of how mutual goals of safety and mentoring can be achieved with trade partners in creating safety programs to ensure for a healthy jobsite.
The Fremont High School Transformation Project included new construction and renovation of existing buildings, which collectively transformed the campus and improved the overall academic and student life experience at this historic high school serving East Oakland and the Fruitvale communities.
Campus improvements include the modernization and expansion of an 40,000-sq-ft, 120-year-old classroom building, which involved seismic upgrades, a new exterior and mechanical/electrical systems, and an updated layout to accommodate new science labs and specialized instructional programs. The upgraded building is also the new home of Fremont High School’s Career Technical Education Pathways program.
New construction on campus included a pre-fabricated classroom building, parking lot, gymnasium, and football field, as well as a new full-service wellness center. The project also included energy efficiency enhancements. High-efficiency heat pumps were installed in the general plant, and new technologies such as high-performing building envelopes and LED lighting were incorporated across the campus.
In August 2021, Cordoba Corporation’s construction management team joined Fremont High School and Oakland Unified School District officials, community leaders, project partners and students in celebrating the ribbon-cutting for the project, just in time for the return to in-person learning for the new school year. Our team was thrilled to once again gather with District officials and project partners in October 2022 at ENR’s regional “Best Projects” celebration in the San Francisco Bay Area to accept the award for Fremont High School.

Long Beach City College Kinesiology Labs and Aquatic Center: Earlier this year, Cordoba Corporation’s Long Beach City College Bond Management Team joined Long Beach Community College District officials and project partners at the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) Southern California Chapter’s 29th Annual Scholarship and Project Awards Gala to accept a Project Achievement Award for the Kinesiology Labs and Aquatics Center project at the District’s Liberal Arts Campus.
This special CMAA recognition followed a ribbon-cutting in April 2021 at which the new state-of-the-art Kinesiology Labs and Aquatic Center were unveiled to the public. Highlights of the new 18-acre athletic complex include new artificial turf soccer and softball fields, tennis courts, beach sand volleyball courts, 50 x 25 meter Olympic-size swimming pool, and 12,000 square feet of support facilities in the Aquatic Center.
Completion of this project marked a significant milestone of the Long Beach City College Facilities Master Plan 2041. The renovation of the Kinesiology Labs focused on upgrading the physical education outdoor playing fields to better accommodate instructional needs as well as intercollegiate athletics. The Aquatic Center component addressed the major and costly repair problems associated with the existing pool and provides a modern, state-of-the-art complex to meet the needs of the instructional Kinesiology program as well as intercollegiate athletics.
CMAA Project Achievement Awards recognize outstanding achievement in the practice of construction management. Award winners serve as examples for CMAA to promote professionalism and excellence in the management of the construction process.
